Adverbs / Present Perfect

A. ALREADY: em frases afirmativas e interrogativas com sentido de JÁ (com sentido de rotina).

I've already made the bed. - Eu já fiz a cama.
Have you already done your lesson? - Você já fez a lição?

B. YET: no final de frases interrogativas com sentido de JÁ ou AINDA.

Have you made friends on your MSN yet? - Você já fez amigos em seu MSN?
Haven't you called your cousin yet? - Você ainda não chamou sua prima?

C. JUST: apenas, acabei de, justo

I've just explained it. - Eu acabei de explicar isto.
She's just sent this e-mail. - Ela acabou de enviar este e-mail.

THE - DEFINITE ARTICLE

eg.: The car that I bought is white. (quando há especificação)

USAREMOS THE NOS SEGUINTES CASOS:
1. antes de nomes próprios que estejam designados à família.
eg.: The Millers / The Smiths

2. antes de nomes próprios compostos.
eg.: The USA / The United Kingdom / The Netherlands / The Republic of Ireland / The Dominician Republic / The Philippines

3. antes de arquipélagos (grupos de ilhas).
eg.: The Virgin Islands / The Bahamas  / The Canaries / The Canary Islands

BUT: individual islands do not use THE - Corfu / Sicil/ Bermuda 

4. antes de nomes de rios.
eg.: The Mississipi / The Amazon

INDEFINITE ARTICLE - A/AN

[ A - um/uma ]
Usaremos antes de:
1. consoante - a clock, a wristwatch
2. som de iu (you) - a useful name, a European, a university, a uniform
3. Y - a yellow submarine
4. W - a window
5. H pronounced - a house

[ AN - um/uma ]
Usaremos antes de:
1. vogal - an egg
2. H mudo - an hour, an honest guy,  an heir, an honor

AMBOS serão usados em:
1. antes de substantivos singulares que designam nacionalidade ou profissão.
eg.: He's  an engineer. / He's an Italian. / My uncle is a lawyer.

>> não usaremos a/an quando houver plural.
eg.: They are lawyers. / I want to buy eggs.

2. antes de numerais como dozen, hundred, thousand, million,... quando estes estiverem no plural.
eg.: The tailor spent a hundred dollars on the supermarket.
eg.: I want to buy a dozen bananas.

3. com a palavra HALF.
eg.: They stayed half an hour here.
eg.: I want a half sandwich.

4. antes de expressões de TEMPO e MEDIDA.
eg.: I go to the movies once a month.
eg.: I go to the bank once a week.
eg.: I travel twice a year.
eg.: She buys jens three times a year.
eg.: twenty cents a gallon.

5. quando designamos calças compridas, meias, botas, óculos, tesouras no sentido de um.
eg.: I want to buy a pair of scissors/a pair of pants/a pair of gloves/a pair of boots/a pair of glasses/a pair of jeans.

6.depois de WHAT em exclamação com o substantivo no singular.
eg.: What a wonderful night!
eg.: What an insteresting girl!

BUT: What impolite children! (no article = plural)

7. depois de QUITE ou RATHER, quando tais palavras precedem substantivos adjetivados.
eg.: It was quite a beautiful day. (bastante)

8. depois da palavra SUCH,  precedendo substantivos no singular isolados ou adjetivados.
eg.: I was in such a hurry.

9.  antes de LITTLE ou FEW, dando o mesmo sentido de SOME.
eg.: Woudln't you have a little salt? Sugar?


NÃO USAREMOS A/AN:
1. antes de substantivos plural.
eg.: tables, sisters, relatives, etc...

2. antes de substantivos incontáveis.
eg.: poverty, snow, sugar, milk, money, time, etc...

3. antes de substantivos.
progress, furniture, luggage, baggage, advice, knowledge, news, information, thunder, equipment, etc...

OBS.:
For lunch I had a sandwich and an aplle. The sandwich wasn't very good.
(Then speaker says A SANDWICH/AN APLLE, because that is the first time he talks about them / The speaker says THE SANDWICH, because the listener now knows which sandwich he had for lunch)

eg.: I cleaned the car yesterday. (a particular car, my car)
eg.: Do you have a car? (not a particular car)

[10] MODALS VERBS

Os verbos em Inglês são classificados em:
a) regulares: formam o passado e particípio passado com ED;
b) irregulares: têm formas próprias para o passado e o particípio passado;
c) anômalos.

Características gerais dos verbos anômalos:
a) não têm infinitivo;
b) não recebem S ou ES na terceira pessoa do singular no presente;
c) não são seguidos de infinitivo sem TO (exceto HAVE e OUGHT);
d) geralmente formam suas próprias interrogativas e negativas.


CAN
(pode)

Expressa:
-Capacidade / habilidade: She can swim.
-Permissão / possibilidade: You can leave now.

Afirmativa: I can play.
Negativa: I can not (can't) play.
Interrogativa: Can I play?


COULD
(poderia)

Expressa:
-Capacidade / habilidade: She could swim years ago.
-Permissão / possibilidade: You could leave five minutes ago.

Afirmativa: I could play.
Negativa: I could not (couldn't) play.
Interrogativa: Could I play?

CAN e COULD são usados nos tempos presente, passado, futuro e condicional e podem ser substituídos por BE.
ABLE TO, no sentido de capacidade e habilidade.


MAY
(posso)

Expressa:
-Permissão: May I come in?
-Possibilidade: It may rain tonight.

Afirmativa: I may go.
Negativa:  I may not go.
Interrogativa: May I go?


MIGHT
(poderia)

Expressa:
-Permissão mais formal: Might I come in?
-Possibilidade mais remota: It might rain tonight.

Afirmativa: I might go.
Negativa: I might not go.
Interrogativa: Might I go?


MUST
(deve)

Expressa:
-Obrigação: Everybody must pay his bills. (...devem pagar...)
-Dedução: You are pale. You must be sick. (...deve estar doente)
-Proibição: You mustn't smoke here. (...não deve...)
-Conselho: You must see that play. (...deve ver)

Afirmativa: I must play.
Negativa: I must bot (mustn't) play.
Interrogativa: Must I play?

MUST é usado nos tempos presente e futuro e pode ser substituído por TO HAVE TO.


SHOULD
(deve)

Expressa:
-Conselho: You should visit your grandmother. (...deve visitar...)
-Dever: You should do your homework. (...deve fazer...)

Afirmativa: I should go.
Negativa: I should not (shouldn't) go.
Interrogativa: Should I go?


OUGHT TO
(devia)

Expressa:
-Conselho: You ought to visit your grandmother.
-Dever: You ought to do your homework.

Afirmativa: I ought to go.
Negativa: I ought not to (oughtn't) go.
Interrogativa: Ought I to go?

OUGHT e SHOULD são usados nos tempos presente, passado e futuro.


USED TO
Expressa:
-A idéia de costumava.
-Algo que era habitual no passado e não é mais praticado no presente.

Afirmativa: I used to have better choices.
Negativa: I didn't use to have better choices.
Interrogativa: Did I use to have better choices?


BE USED TO
Expressa:
-A idéia de estar acostumado a algo;
-Pode ser seguido de outro verbo conjugado no particípio presente (ING) ou de substantivo.

Afirmativa: She is used to driving on the right.
Negativa: She isn't used to driving on the right.
Interrogativa: Is she used to driving on the right?


HAD BETTER ('D BETTER)
(é melhor que)

Expressa:
-Uma espécie de conselho, algo que deveria ser feito por alguém;
-É traduzido como Seria Melhor ou Deveria ser melhor;
-É sempre seguido de infinitivo sem TO.

Afirmativa: We'd better take an umbrella with us.
Negativa: We'd better not take an umbrella with us.
Interrogativa: Had we better take an umbrella with us?


WOULD RATHER
(eu preferiria)

Expressa:
-Preferência;
-É sempre seguido de infinitivo sem TO.

Afirmativa: I would rather take a taxi tahn walk home.

[6] RELATIVE PRONOUNS

INTRODUCTION:

eg1.: Personalidade
- What is she like?
- She is dever, vain, predictable,...

eg2.: Como a pessoa é
- What does she look like?
- She is slim (esbelta); chubby (cheinha); fat (gorda).
- She is muscle (musculosa); skinny (macérrima); thin (magra).


OBSERVAÇÃO GERAL:
Olhar sempre para o que vem antes e depois.


1. WHO/THAT
Usado quando há uma pessoa antes e nenhum pronome reto depois.

eg1.: That is the woman (who/that) got late at the meeting.
eg2.: The maid (who/that) speaks Italian fluentlly is coming.
eg3.: That man is talking. He is my uncle.
That man (who/taht) is talking is my uncle.

2. WHO/THAT/WHOM/X
Usado quando há uma pessoa antes e pronome reto depois.
X significa OMITIR.

eg1.: That child (who/taht/x/whom) I was talking yesterday was very sly.
eg2.: Those ladies (who/that/x/whom) I introduced you were fibber.

fibber = liar = mentirosas
fiber = fibra

3. WHICH/THAT
Usado quando há objeto antes e nenhum pronome reto depois.

eg.: This is the coffee table (that/which) is very old.

4. WHICH/THAT/X
Usado quando há objeto antes e pronome reto depois.
eg.: That couch (that/which/x) I bought is awful.

5. WHOSE
Usado quando expressar posse.
Usado com qualquer antecedente.
Não pode ser omitido.

eg1.: That dog, whose paw is hurt, is hers.
eg2.: That woman, whose son is crazy, loves to go out with man.


OBSERVAÇÕES IMPORTANTES:

I.
You can't use THAT when there will be commas.
Você não pode usar THAT entre vírgular.

> Quando vier objeto antes da vírgula, usa-se WHICH.
That is the book, which was a steal, is mine.

> Quando vier pessoa antes d vírgula, usa-se WHO ou WHOM.
That guy, (who/whom) is robbing that truch, is a friend of mine.

II.
When there are two different things/people, you must use THAT.
Quando existir dois objetos/pessoas diferentes, você deve usar THAT.

eg.: The magazine and the novel that I am reading are terrific.

III.
When there is superlative, indefinides pronouns, ordinal numbers and words as SOME/ANY/EVERYTHING/MUCH/LITTLE/ONLY/ALL, you use THAT
Quando há superlativo, pronomes indefinidos, números ordinais, você usa THAT.

eg1.: Everything that you say it's a lie.
eg2.: This is the tenth loan you got at the bank.

IV.
When there are prepositions before or the end of the sentences, use WHICH ou WHOM.

eg1.: To whom did you send that e-mail? [or] Whom did you send that e-mail to?
Para quem você enviou aquele e-mail?

eg2.: That cell phone, in which you love speak, is mine.
Aquele celular, em que você ama falar, é meu.
