- Usa-se no past e singular.
- Havia/Existia
 
Aff.: There was a book on the table. >> Tinha/Havia um livro em cima da mesa.
Int.: Was there a book on the table? >> Tinha/Havia um livro em cima da mesa?
Neg.: There was not (wasn't) a book on the table. >> Não tinha/havia um livro em cima da mesa.


THERE WERE & THERE WERE NOT (WEREN'T)
- Usa-se no past e pural.
- Havia/Existiam
 
Aff.: There were three boys outside. >> Tinha/Havia três meninos lá fora.
Int.: Were there three boys outside? >> Tinha/Havia três meninos lá for a?
Neg.: There were not (weren't) three boys outside. >> Não tinha/havia três meninos lá fora.
